Where Business Opportunities Arise for Companies

Security & Defence is not a single, unified market, but a cross-technology, cross-industry environment. Opportunities arise especially where industrial expertise, high quality standards, and specialized technologies meet concrete security and defence requirements.

For Styrian companies, existing expertise in mechanical engineering, mobility, aerospace, electronics, sensor technology, materials, digitalization, cybersecurity, or production technology can become relevant. Many solutions were originally developed for civilian applications and may also hold dual-use potential, depending on the technology, field of application, and end use.

Important: Whether a product, software, or technology is classified as a dual-use or defence good under export control law depends on its specific technical classification and the particular business undertaking.

FAQ

Dual use refers to goods, software, or technologies that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. Whether a specific solution is subject to export control must be assessed based on its technical characteristics, the relevant control lists, and the end use and destination country.

Not only traditional defence companies. Suppliers and technology companies from fields such as mechanical engineering, mobility, aerospace, electronics, sensor technology, materials, cybersecurity, or production technology can also bring relevant expertise and dual-use potential.

Exports to third countries and certain other transactions may be controlled or subject to authorization. Companies should assess goods classification, recipient, destination country, end use, sanctions, and embargoes at an early stage. The competent export control authority in Austria is the BMWET.

Access is often gained through specialized networks, industry events, international procurement and cooperation formats, as well as direct contacts with system integrators, public contracting authorities, and supply chains. The ICS supports companies with international positioning and business development.

For international marketing and export questions, the ICS is your point of contact. In addition, ACstyria brings together expertise on Security & Defence in Styria, while the BMWET is responsible for export control. Depending on the specific issue, further specialized partner organizations may be involved.
