The reconstruction of Ukraine is not just a future topic for Styrian companies. Even today, destroyed facilities must be replaced, energy supply secured, and interrupted supply chains restored. The symposium “Reconstruction of Ukraine – Opportunities and Contribution of the Austrian Economy” on October 12, 2026, at Grazer Meerscheinschlössl focused on the economic opportunities arising from this and how companies can position themselves early.

Together, the ICS, WKO Steiermark, the University of Graz, and the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine invited experts from politics, science, and business for an exchange. It became clear that opportunities for Austrian and Styrian companies arise particularly in the areas of energy, construction, and infrastructure.

David Bachmann, Austrian Economic Delegate in Kyiv, provided insights into the current economic situation on the ground. Austria’s exports to Ukraine have significantly increased since the beginning of the war, with a substantial part attributable to necessary replacement investments. The Ukrainian Ambassador to Austria, Vasyl Khymynets, described the effects of the attacks on Ukraine’s energy, water, and transport infrastructure.

With Ukraine’s EU accession process, the country’s European perspective was also discussed. Paul Gragl from the University of Graz contextualized the start of EU accession negotiations in 2024 and highlighted both the opportunities of European rapprochement and existing political and legal hurdles. Wolfgang Anzengruber, coordinator of the Austrian federal government for Ukraine’s reconstruction, particularly emphasized the importance of early positioning. Companies should not wait for tenders but rather establish contacts in advance, find suitable partners, and co-develop concrete projects.

The event was opened by Peter Riedler, Rector of the University of Graz, Josef Herk, President of WKO Steiermark, and Friedrich Möstl, Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Styria. Regional Minister for Economic Affairs Willibald Ehrenhöfer emphasized the economic and European political significance of the reconstruction. The discussion was moderated by Karl Hartleb, Managing Director of the Internationalization Center Styria.

For the Styrian economy, the existing contacts with the Ukrainian regions of Lviv and Kirovohrad provide a good basis for further cooperation. The focus now is on supporting companies early with information, financing options, and hedging instruments, bringing together the right partners, and thereby preparing concrete projects in Ukraine.
