Review | EXPORT ACADEMY: Customs Knowledge for Exports to Third Countries

How can companies handle their export business outside the EU safely and efficiently? What role do rules of origin, customs procedures, and preference regulations play? These questions were the focus of the EXPORT ACADEMY “Customs Knowledge for Exports to Third Countries,” where the ICS on October 21, 2026 welcomed numerous representatives of Styrian companies to CAMPUS 02.

Following the welcome by DiGEM Project Manager Lisa-Maria Katholnig, Abigail Garcia, who was also responsible for organizing the EXPORT ACADEMY, led through the program. Marion Kikinger (ICS) provided information about the go-international initiative, while Karin Hölbling (ICS) presented the Fit 4 Global Projects program, which supports Austrian companies in the development and implementation of international investment projects.

In the subsequent technical section, Deloitte experts Astrid Isopp, Michael Vorraber, and Philipp Dillinger shared practical expertise regarding customs law basics, the correct tariff classification of goods, customs procedures, VAT, and export control. A special focus was placed on practical application: using specific case studies, participants worked with relevant customs databases and information sources and learned how to use them effectively for their export business.

The EXPORT ACADEMY took place as part of the DiGEM – Digital Gateway Emerging Markets project. With practical qualification offers and direct funding of up to 75%, DiGEM supports Styrian companies in opening up new markets, digitalizing their export activities, and attracting international specialists.

Conclusion: Successful export processing begins long before the actual shipment of goods. Those who correctly determine customs tariff numbers, know the rules of origin, and consider required documentation early on can avoid errors and make export processes more secure. The numerous questions and lively exchange showed how valuable practical knowledge and direct dialogue with experts are for Styrian companies.
