Only 14% of Styrian exports currently go to Emerging Markets, despite a significant portion of current – and likely future – economic growth taking place there. Our full-day IPE (International Project Development) Symposium on last Thursday, March 27, in Graz was dedicated to this increasingly important economic region, laying the groundwork for a series of further relevant events.
Excellent experts from institutions central to the financing of relevant export transactions and the hedging of project risks in Emerging Markets – such as OeKB, OeEB, ADA, VIAC – were present, as were practitioners with years of company and project experience, notably ILF, Siemens Energy, TPA Horwath, and AEE Intec.
What did we take away from the event?
-
Emerging Markets are a must – even for many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
-
Commitment, focus, and perseverance are required, as projects often need to be initiated independently.
-
Profound knowledge of local conditions and existing hedging and support instruments is essential.
-
Solid training on the topic is recommended – but does not replace practical on-site experience.
-
A gradual entry – ideally with already established partners – is advisable given the existing risks.
