As of July 1, 2026, a new customs regime will apply in the European Union for e-commerce consignments from third countries: for goods consignments with a value of less than €150, a flat-rate customs duty of €3 per goods category will be levied in future. The measure is intended to make competition between European and non-European providers fairer and to better manage the increasing workload of customs authorities in online trade.
What does this mean for Styrian companies?
The new regime particularly affects companies that source goods from non-EU countries via e-commerce channels or operate corresponding business models. The key changes at a glance:
- The previous customs exemption for consignments with a value of less than €150 will no longer apply.
- For small consignments, a flat-rate customs duty of €3 per goods category (tariff heading) will be charged in future. For example, if a consignment with a value of less than €150 contains sunglasses, two T-shirts and 1 pair of headphones, a total flat-rate customs duty of €9 will be due for the three different goods categories.
- The regime applies to the majority of e-commerce imports from third countries and is intended to ensure fair competitive conditions in European online trade.
The regime is limited until July 1, 2028 (planned launch of the EU Customs Data Hub).
