In early November, we had the pleasure of welcoming H.E. Matilda Aku Alomatu Ose-Agyeman, Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to Austria, at the ICS in Graz.
Together with our Managing Director Karl Hartleb, Chamber Director Karl-Heinz Dernoscheg, Markus Maierhofer (FIMA Industries GmbH) and the ICS experts Lisa-Maria Katholnig, Abigail Garcia and Sandra Tanos, an intensive and highly insightful exchange took place with the Ambassador.
Key topics of the discussion:
- Trade relations between Styria and Ghana
- Current activities of the WKO Styria and the ICS
- Economic developments and opportunities for cooperation
- Deepening and strengthening bilateral relations between Styria and the Republic of Ghana
The Ambassador showed particular interest in the ICS project Digital Gateway Emerging Markets (DiGEM). With this initiative, the ICS is supporting Styrian companies from September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2027 on their path into promising growth markets – co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The meeting was an inspiring exchange that once again underscored the great value of dialogue between diplomacy and business.
Economic background on Ghana
With over 30 million inhabitants, Ghana is the world’s second-largest cocoa producer after Côte d’Ivoire and Africa’s largest gold producer. The country’s economy relies heavily on the export of raw materials such as crude oil, gold and cocoa. As a result, Ghana is highly dependent on global commodity prices and feels the impact of price fluctuations directly.
China is among Ghana’s most important trading partners, both as a buyer of crude oil and manganese and as a key supplier of machinery. As industrialization efforts progress, machinery imports in particular are expected to continue rising. Other important trading partners include the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and India (gold).
