East Styrian know-how for China and Africa

The East Styrian company ensowa – innovation und umweltconsulting gmbh is establishing itself in China and reaching out to Africa.

Founded in October 2006, the company offers services with innovative approaches to preserving and protecting valuable resources: soil – water – energy.

20 years of experience as a chartered engineering consultant for agricultural and environmental economics – from 1998 to 2018 – also facilitated the decision to include research and development for innovative developments.

The expert, creative team of the East Styrian company consists of BOKU graduates, mechanical engineers, civil engineering technicians, locksmiths, energy and environmental managers, and is happy to advise on questions regarding environmental technology in water and soil protection, waste management, remediation of contaminated sites, and efficient energy use. Addressing individual customer needs and offering tailor-made solutions – rather than “universal products” – is the idea behind the creative minds at ensowa – innovation und umweltconsulting gmbh.

The agriculture department specializes in emission assessments. The environmental technology department works intensively in the field of “in-situ remediation” using innovative technology. Numerous existing reference projects at home and abroad confirm the successful impact of the patented sowatec process.

Products & Services

  • Water protection – water/wastewater
  • Operative remediation of environmental damage, particularly oil contamination in groundwater and soil using microorganisms – technology by ensowa gmbh

The uniqueness of his company is also demonstrated by the nomination of Karl Putz and his company ensowa for the “Personalities of the Year” award in the “Business and Research” category for East and Southeast Styria in 2019.

Collaboration with the ICS began in 2008 with participation in the China country focus. Mr. Putz was among the participants of the business trip to Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing, where he was able to establish his first contacts in China.

The company’s technologies are in demand in China

Through the state’s Internationalization Center (ICS) in cooperation with the Green Tech Cluster, company head Karl Putz reached out to China years ago. Today, he not only holds a guest professorship at the university in Shenyang but also operates remediation techniques with licensing partners. The company ensowa has filed its own patent for these remediation systems. “With this mobile unit, contamination with mineral oil hydrocarbons or even groundwater can be remediated directly in the subsoil, i.e., ‘in-situ’,” Putz explains.

He had already been on the market with it for five years; now Putz has extended the license for another two years. He has won over a company with around 2,000 employees for this, and other companies are interested in joining. “Environmental laws are constantly being tightened in China, and the technologies are in demand,” says Putz, who travels to the distant country four to five times a year. A second university there (Dalian University of Technology) has already expressed interest in his expertise.

“For us, it was a very successful delegation trip to South Africa. There were many interesting and promising discussions with the participating companies, during which new business contacts were also established!”

The company subsequently utilized funding and export consulting services from the ICS.

We are pleased that Mr. Putz was also part of the Green Tech business trip to Cape Town at the beginning of the year and now wishes to expand his reach into South Africa. “For us, it was a very successful delegation trip to South Africa. There were many interesting and promising discussions with the participating companies, during which new business contacts were also established!” says Karl Putz.

  • LATEST NEWS: “According to Karl Putz, ensowa gmbh is currently in the bidding phase for the remediation of environmental damage in Cape Town.” According to the interested party, it is intended to be a trial or pilot project. If this works, a major damage case in Nigeria is to be tendered!
